- Q: How to overhaul rear brake calipers without J55 on 2000 Cadillac DeVille?A: You start overhauling the rear brake caliper by taking it off from your vehicle. To take the Piston and boot out turn the Piston counterclockwise with a spanner wrench while keeping away from using metal tools to guard the caliper components from harm. First use a small plastic or wooden tool to extract the boot ring from the seal grooves in the caliper bore. Then remove both the Piston seal and Piston boot altogether from the Piston. Remove the bleeder valve from the caliper body since the lever return spring is the only item that needs replacement when updating the parking brake brake mechanism; a new caliper will solve brake issues. Replace the failed lever return spring unit. Put snap ring pliers on the snap ring to remove it and change the Piston when internal parts of the caliper show damage. Clean all parts from the Piston including spacer, wave washer, spacer, ball bearings and adjusting nut using denatured alcohol before drying them with low-pressure air. Also clean caliper bleeder valve and body passages. Use emery paper only on other parts because the Piston sliding surface features plated protection. Check if roughness, rust, wear marks, or foreign material exists on the Piston and order a new part if needed. You can clean the caliper cylinder with fresh brake fluid but avoid mineral oil treatment. Minor damage from light rust or foreign objects needs polishing with fine emery paper. When cleaning the cylinder you should also examine its inner surface for defects before replacing the caliper body unit. Put everything back together by first installing the adjusting nut then the rest of the Piston parts in correct order: ball bearings, spacer, wave washer and spacer before adding the snap ring. Position the bleeder valve into the caliper body while adding brake fluid lubricant to the new Piston seal before putting it into the caliper unit. Install the boot on the Piston and place the Piston fully into the caliper using a spanner tool. Put the boot ring into the caliper holes next to the Piston boot to complete the installation.
