- Q: How to replace the rear brake pads (JE5-17 Inch) on 2006 Cadillac CTS?A: Checking the brake fluid level first is essential when replacing the rear brake pads of a je5-17 inch. You can start the replacement without draining fluid if the reservoir shows between its maximum and minimum points. Lift up the car and take out the wheel tire from its position. Position a big c-clamp over the caliper body and hold its ends against it and against the outboard Brake Pad. Tighten until the caliper piston pushes through the brake rotor when compressed. Hold the guide pin with wrench while you loosen and remove the lower brake caliper pin bolt. Secure the brake caliper to heavy mechanic's wire so it won't strain the hydraulic brake hose. You can raise the caliper without disconnecting the hose. Check the Brake Pad holders during pad removal. Check the guide pin bolts and pins for wear while installing the brake caliper. Also test the guide pin seals and piston boot for wear and replace them when necessary. Place the large c-clamp over the caliper piston and push it fully into the bore. Then take back the clamp and install brake pads and retainers while placing the wear sensor at the end of the pads. After cleaning the lower caliper pin bolt threads and bracket holes use denatured alcohol apply threadlocker gm 12345493 (CAD P/N 10953488) to two-thirds of the bolt space. Apply high-temperature silicone lube to the guide pin of the front brake caliper after ten minutes and tighten the lower brake caliper pin bolt to 60 nm (44 ft. Lbs.). Place the tire and wheel back on before lowering the vehicle. Press the Brake Pedal gently when the engine is off until it reaches two-thirds of its range then release pressure slowly. Use the brake one time every 15 seconds to reach the target pedal feel. This operation ensures brake pads and caliper pistons align perfectly. Complete the brake master cylinder reservoir with the proper amount of fluid while performing Brake Pad and rotor wear-in procedures.
