GMC Canyon Steering Shaft Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to Service and Repair the Steering Shaft in a Tilt Column on GMC Canyon?
A: If you are replacing the steering column shaft for a tilt column, first you must disable the sir system. When you need to perform the job, take off the tilt spring and in case you need to, the linear shift assembly and the electrical btsi actuator. Next, remove the Ignition Switch and lock housing, then the upper intermediate Steering Shaft and the lower shaft bearing assembly. Remove the pivot pins using the pivot pin remover (J 21854-01). Pull the tilt arm to release the steering wheel protection shoes from the dowel pins in the steering column support assembly, afterward take out the steering column housing assembly. After that, remove the Steering Shaft assembly. Thereafter and for installation, place the Steering Shaft assembly into the steering column housing and install the steering column housing assembly. In positioning the lock shoes to the dowel pins, use the tilt lever followed by rotating the tilt head assembly to align the holes for the pivot pins. Apply lubrication to the new pivot pins with gm p/n 12346293 (Canadian P/N 992723) and press it in far enough to firmly seat it, staking it in at 3 new places. Finally, put on the lower shaft bearing assembly, upper intermediate Steering Shaft, Ignition Switch and lock housing, linear shift assembly if applicable, and the tilt spring and enable sir system.
