How to replace the rod bearing in an engine on Chevrolet Cobalt? Posted by Customer
    A:
To replace the Piston, connecting rod and bearing, it is necessary to remove the Oil Pan and the Cylinder Head. A ridge will signify if there is a ring ridge and in this case, you need to turn the Crankshaft until the Piston is at the bottom of the stroke, apply a cloth on top of it and use a ridge reamer to remove the ring ridge. Then, drive the Crankshaft to the top of stroke, remove the cloth and cutting debris, and remember to mark connecting rods and caps for assembly. Next; remove the connecting rod nuts and cap, dispose of the bolt and nuts and extract the connecting rod and Piston from engine block using (J 41742),and(J-43966-1) wash the cylinder bores with hot water and detergent or light honing and wipe the bores with engine oil and fresh, dry cotton cloth. For installation, treat the Piston, piston rings, cylinder bore, and bearing surfaces lubricate with engine oil and install the Piston back into its original bore using (J-43966-1), (J 43953), (J 41742). Gently strike the top of the Piston with a wooden end of a hammer handle, such that the struck marked on the Piston is facing the front of the engine. Squeeze hold (J 43953) against the engine block until all the Piston rings have entered the cylinder bore and that's when install the connecting rod caps to their original connecting rods aligning the previously marked numbers. Change out the connecting rod bolts and nuts tightening them to 25 nm (18 lb ft) so as to have an equal torque across the bolts and then use (J 45059), tightening nuts by an additional 100 degrees on the final pass. Check the connecting rod side clearance using a feeler gauge, for which it should fall between 0.070-0.370 mm (0.0027-0.0145 in). Lastly, mount the Cylinder Head and the Oil Pan.

    A:
Tools needed to service and to repair the connecting Rod Bearing are: connecting rod guide pin (J 43953), piston ring compressor (J 43953), connecting rod guides (J-43966-1), and angle meter (J 45059). Start with the removal of the Oil Pan and the Cylinder Head. In case there is a presence of ring ridge, then turn the crank shaft to bottom out the Piston and cover it with cloth while using the ridge reamer to clear the ridge. Then unscrew the nuts and cap from the connecting rod, discard the bolts and nuts, and pull the connecting rod and Piston out of the engine block using the given tools j 41742 and j-43966-1. Scrub the bores with hot water and detergent or light honing, and after that swab them with engine oil and a dry cloth. For installation, oil the Piston, piston rings, cylinder bore, and the bearing surfaces with engine oil. Install the Piston in the original top bore using j-43966-1, j-43953, and j-41742, tapping the top of the Piston gently with a wooden hammer handle. Make sure the stamped mark on the Piston faces the front of the engine and guide the connecting rod guide pin (J 43953) and solidly push against the engine block until all the Piston rings reach inside the cylinder bore. Install the connecting rod caps on their original connecting rods, with the previously marked numbers align, and install new connecting rod bolts and nuts. Tighten the nuts uniformly to 25 n.m (18 lb ft) on the first pass, and then using the angle meter (J 45059), tighten the nuts a further 100-degrees on the final pass. Check the connecting rod side clearance using a feeler gauge and it should be between 0.070-0.370mm (0.0027-0.0145in), reattach the Cylinder Head and Oil Pan.

Then turn Crankshaft to the top of the stroke take off the cloth and debris and you must mark the connecting rods and cap when reassembling. Then loosen the connecting rod nuts and cap, disposing of the bolts and nuts in the discard lot, and pull the connecting rod and Piston from the engine block using the connecting rod guides (J-43966-1).
