Q: How to replace the idler arm on GMC Savana 2500?
A: In order to replace the idler arm, first lift and support the vehicle. Delete the idler arm to relay rod retaining nut and scrap it. For removing the idler arm from the relay rod, use the J 43631 (Ball Joint Remover); then remove the idler arm to frame mounting bolts and take the idler arm out of the vehicle. For installation, align the idler arm to the frame, with caution on fastener guidelines. Attach the idler arm to frame mounting bolts and torque them to 150 Nm (111 lb ft). Join the idler arm to the relay rod and then fit a new idler arm to relay rod retaining nut and tighten it to 63 Nm (47 lb ft). Finally, lower the vehicle and have it aligned if out of alignment.
Q: How to service and repair the idler arm on GMC Jimmy?
A: Service and repair processes for the Idler Arm begin with using safety stands to lift and support the vehicle. Start the Idler Arm service and differential carrier shield repair by removing the mounting bolts to remove the steering linkage shield and differential carrier shield. The next step requires removal of the Idler Arm mounting bolts coupled with nuts from the frame using correct tools to separate all ball joints. The universal steering linkage puller (J 24319-B) enables removal of the Idler Arm by disconnecting its relay rod from the steering linkage. An inspection of ball stud threads and seal should be performed before cleaning the ball stud threads and the ball stud nut. Position the Idler Arm on the frame then install its mounting bolts followed by the nuts while tightening everything to 108 nm (79 ft. Lbs.). Reattach the relay rod to the Idler Arm ball stud while placing the seal properly before tightening the taper with either the steering linkage installer (112 mm) (J 29193) or steering linkage installer (114 mm) (J 29194) up to 54 nm (40 ft. Lbs.). Use the replacement nut on the Idler Arm ball stud and torque it to 82 nm (60 ft. Lbs.). Install the differential carrier shield along with its mounting bolts which need to be tightened to 25 nm (19 ft. Lbs.) before putting on the steering linkage shield. Complete the process by performing front toe adjustment while lowering the vehicle.
A: When replacing the idler arm you must first raise the vehicle then disconnect its two keeping bolts. The prevailing torque nut needs removal from both the idler arm ball stud. The Steering Linkage and Tie Rod Puller (J 24319-B) separates the relay rod from the idler arm before you remove the arm. Examine the ball stud threads before cleaning both the ball stud threads and ball stud nut threads. Also verify the ball stud seal remains intact without any damage. Mount the idler arm to the frame after installing two bolts which need to be tightened to 105 Nm (77 ft. lbs.). Demonize the Steering Linkage Installer (J 29193) for inserting the relay rod onto the idler arm ball stud while maintaining the seal position on the stud then fasten with 54 Nm (40 ft. lbs.) for taper seating. To replace the J 29193 locking tool you must install a new prevailing torque nut at the idler arm ball stud before tightening it to 47 Nm (35 ft. lbs.). The vehicle needs to be brought near the ground level before final toe-in adjustment.
