Position Sensor

Head to the replacement of the Steering Angle Sensor or steering shaft lower bearing by first disabling the sir system. First separate the Steering Column from your vehicle. Pull the boot seal and steering shaft seal and sensor retainer and sensor locator off the steering shaft. Along with the boot seal and steering shaft seal you must remove the sensor retainer and sensor locator from the components. Next follow up with sensor Steering Angle Sensor removal. Start with positioning the Steering Angle Sensor directly onto the steering shaft, then continue with installation of the sensor locator, sensor retainer, steering shaft seal, and boot seal. Put back the Steering Column into the car before you activate the sir system.

When reinstalling a reused sensor it's necessary to make an alignment mark on the rotor flange cuff prior to removal to prevent alignment issues. A fresh sensor delivery includes a built-in pin which must not be removed before installation. Keep the pin installed until you successfully position the sensor inside its mount. Put the sensor in alignment with the steering shaft before inserting it into the adapter and bearing assembly and attaching the sensor. A pin aperture on the sensor front surface resides together with a raised rotor flange cuff and an alignment reference point. The existing sensor requires its alignment marks on the raised rotor flange cuff to match before installing the sensor components. Each sensor requires the same alignment setup following installation including careful documentation of critical features and specific alignment points.

Begin by performing the sir system disable procedure at the sir disabling and enabling zone. Start by removing the vehicle's Steering Column then detach these components from the steering shaft: boot seal, steering shaft seal, sensor retainer, and sensor locator. Boot seal and steering shaft seal and sensor retainer and sensor locator make up the list of parts needed for replacement. Next, remove the Steering Angle Sensor from the system. Install the new Steering Angle Sensor onto the steering shaft followed by sensor locator and then sensor retainer and steering shaft seal and finishing with boot seal installation. Reposition the Steering Column into the vehicle and follow the sir system authorization protocol found in the sir disabling and enabling zone.

Start by identifying your Steering Angle Sensor type based on the listed illustrations before starting the removal process. From the technician's perspective the sensor connector faces right. Removing centering marks becomes unnecessary when keeping the current sensor for reuse. Two d flats appear on the sensor's back section combined with a foam ring and alignment tab. Before sensor installation users must line up the alignment marks on the flush rotor flange cuff while they remain in precise alignment throughout the sensor's full insertion. For each additional sensor follow the same procedure by documenting features and alignment needs which include raised rotor flange cuffs (3, 5), alignment marks (2, 4) and pin holes (1, 2, 3).

Disabling the sir system must happen before installing new parts for the Steering Angle Sensor or Steering Shaft lower bearing. Start by removing the Steering Column followed by detaching the turn signal switch housing assembly from the vehicle. Take off the tilt spring before extracting 2 pivot pins from the Steering Column support assembly with the pivot pin remover (J 21854-01). Begin by removing the boot seal and then remove the Steering Shaft seal when no sensor is detected. Remove the sensor retainer if necessary. Follow this installation sequence: remove the sensor locator when the sensor exists, remove the sensor assembly when it exists. Install the combination of sensor retainer and Steering Shaft seal. Begin sensor installation by aligning it at 9 o'clock before adding the sensor locator then the boot seal. First install the Steering Shaft assembly into the Steering Column tilt head assembly before placing the tilt head assembly combined with the Steering Shaft into the Steering Column jacket assembly. Install a new Steering Column support assembly because previous stake marks have reached their third instance. Lubricate the Steering Column support assembly's pivot pins using gm p/n 12346293 (Canadian P/N 992723) before installing both pins and staking them in three locations. Reinstall the tilt spring assembly and turn signal switch housing before reinserting the Steering Column into the vehicle then activate the sir system.

The sir system must be disabled before replacing the Steering Angle Sensor and Steering Shaft lower bearing. After vehicle turn signal switch housing removal and Steering Column extraction, remove the tilt spring. First install the Steering Shaft assembly into the Steering Column tilt head assembly and afterward assemble the tilt head assembly with the Steering Shaft into the Steering Column jacket assembly. The support assembly for the Steering Column requires replacement after 3 stake operations while pivot pins need to be lubricated with gm p/n 12346293 (Canadian P/N 992723). Install each pivot pin onto the Steering Column support assembly while making stake points at 3 locations. The vehicle requires installation of the tilt spring assembly followed by the turn signal switch housing and Steering Column assembly before enabling the sir system.

A pivot pin remover (J 21854-01) serves as the essential tool for Steering Angle Sensor maintenance including Steering Angle Sensor or Steering Shaft lower bearing replacement. Pivot pin remover (J 21854-01). Start your process by disabling the sir system. Initiate the service by removing the Steering Column followed by detachment of the turn signal switch housing. After the Steering Column support assembly has its tilt spring removed use the pivot pin remover (J 21854-01) to uninstall two pivot pins from the assembly. Remove the boot seal. Move forward with removing first the Steering Shaft seal then the sensor retainer unless the sensor is absent. The procedure requires discarding of the sensor locator and sensor assembly. Installation requires installing the sensor retainer followed by the Steering Shaft seal if the sensor is not present. Assemble the sensor assembly first and then the sensor locator and boot seal following proper alignment to the 9 o'clock position. Put the Steering Shaft assembly into the Steering Column tilt head assembly followed by putting both parts into the Steering Column jacket assembly. Steering Column support assembly replacement must occur after three stake incidents. Related gm p/n 12346293 (Canadian P/N 992723) lubrication complements the mounting of 2 pivot pins onto the Steering Column support assembly where staking happens across 3 locations. The installation process includes returning the vehicle components to their place and enabling the sir system.

Reinstall the steering column into the vehicle and enable the SIR system.

Repeat the alignment and installation process, noting specific features such as the raised rotor flange cuff and the alignment tab for proper installation.

First, disable the SIR system.

Remove the steering wheel position sensor.

Remove the sensor from the adapter and bearing assembly.

Ensure the FRONT has a foam ring, a pin hole for centering the pin, and a flush rotor flange cuff.

The BACK of the sensor will have double D flats and an alignment tab.

Repeat the alignment and installation process, noting the specific features and alignment marks for successful installation.

Ensure the FRONT of the sensor connector is on the right.

Align the marks on the flush rotor flange cuff before installation, ensuring they remain aligned until the sensor is seated.

Install the sensor assembly, ensuring it is aligned to the 9 o'clock position, followed by the sensor locator and the boot seal.

Remove the steering column from the vehicle, followed by the turn signal switch housing and the tilt spring.

Take out the steering shaft seal and the sensor retainer.

Install the steering shaft assembly into the steering column tilt head assembly, followed by the tilt head assembly and the steering shaft into the steering column jacket assembly.

The BACK will have double D flats, a foam ring, and an alignment tab.

Ensure the sensor is centered before removal.

Repeat the alignment and installation process for each sensor type, ensuring to note the specific features such as the alignment marks and pin holes for proper installation.

Proceed to remove the sensor assembly, followed by the lower spring retainer and the adapter and bearing assembly.

Ensure it is centered and rotate the steering shaft assembly to the 12 o'clock position.

Begin by attaching the adapter and bearing assembly to the steering shaft.
