Water Pump

The first step to replace the water pump (LA3, LY9) includes draining the cooling system and taking off the timing belt cover. Use a catch basin to capture coolant while loosening the water pump bolts. You should remove the water pump along with its seal before discarding the seal while cleaning the mating surfaces and inspecting the pump. Silicone grease from GM P/N 12345579 (Canadian P/N 1974984 or equivalent) needs application on the water pump's seal ring before installing the O-ring seal properly before pump assembly. Utilize the Fastener Notice in Service Precautions while installing the water pump into the engine block then secure the water pump bolts by torquing them to 25 Nm(18 ft. lbs.). Reinstall the timing belt cover then refill the cooling system as the final installation step.

Removing the Water Pump starts with draining the cooling system and unwinding the Drive Belt. The en 46104 Water Pump Pulley holding tool enables safe Water Pump Pulley maintenance while you loosen and remove Water Pump bolts and the pulley itself. First take out all Water Pump bolts before removing the old Water Pump and discarding the worn Water Pump seal. Prepare all Water Pump sealing points by cleansing them thoroughly before adding a fresh Water Pump seal and Water Pump. Fit the Water Pump bolts at 10 n.m (89 lb in) then put in the Water Pump Pulley with its bolts but keep using en 46104 tool to hold the pulley during bolt tightening at 10 n.m (89 lb in). Reposition the Drive Belt after putting the water in the cooling system.

Use a flat-bladed tool to disconnect the electrical connectors from the solenoid valves (315A, 315B, 322, 334, and 440), the TFP manual valve position switch (395), and the temperature sensor (391), ensuring not to remove the bolt (205) that holds the oil pump together.

Install it back onto the valve body (300).

Remove the oil pump bolts (206, 207) and take out the oil pump (200) from the valve body (300).

Remove the water pump pulley bolts and the pulley itself.

Clean the water pump sealing surfaces thoroughly before installing a new water pump seal and the water pump.

Use the Water Pump Pulley Holding Tool (EN 46104) to retain the water pump pulley.

Clean the mating surfaces of the water pump.

Discard the old water pump gasket and clean the mating surfaces.

Take out the water pump bolts and the water pump, ensuring to remove and discard the water pump seal.

Proceed to remove the water pump bolts and the water pump, ensuring to discard the old water pump seal.

Remove the crankshaft sprocket.

Use the Hose Clamp Pliers (J38185) to slide the hose clamp down on the hose and disconnect the hose from the afterboil coolant pump.

Slide the oil pump assembly off the nose of the crankshaft with the drive collar in place, and clean and inspect the oil pump.

Tighten the bolts to 12 N.m (106 lb in).

Remove the water pump pulley bolts and the pulley itself.

Position the new auxiliary water pump and install the nuts, tightening them to 9 N.m (80 lb in).

Tighten the water pump bolts to 10 Nm (89 lb in).

First, drain the cooling system.

Reinstall the drive belt tensioner and the drive belt, followed by the cooling fan.

Install the water pump pulley and its bolts.

Take out the water pump pulley bolts and the water pump pulley itself.

Fill the coolant.

Reattach the oxygen sensor wire harness bracket to the stud.
