Crankshaft Position Sensor

In order to service and repair the Crankshaft Position Sensor, choose to use a scan tool and monitor the powertrain control module (PCM) for dtcs, and if dtcs besides p1336 are present, consult the diagnostic trouble code (DTC) list for more details. Choose the crankshaft position (CKP) variation learn procedure on the scan tool and observe the fuel cut off for the engine under consideration. Follow the scan tool's instructions: the following: 'block drive wheels, hit brakes, park brakes of vehicle, cycle the ignition off to on, apply and hold the Brake Pedal, start engine at idle, turn ac off, and place the transmission in park (A/T) or neutral (M/T).' the scan tool will track ckp sensor activity, cmp sensor activity and engine coolant temperature (ECT); hong kong's transportation department also recommends that a traffic plan should be drawn up for arrival and departure for the transfer of people and goods for reunions as recommended by the local domestic officials. Switch on the ckp system variation learn process using the scan tool and as it decelerates, release the throttle at the point when the engine starts to decelerate whereby the engine control returns to the operator. Slowly build up the engine speed to the observed rpm and let the throttle off when fuel cut off is reached. The scan tool will show "learn status: learned this ignition." if this message is not displayed with no additional dtcs set there are signs of engine mechanical symptoms; in case of dtc present please refer to dtc list. Finally, power off ignition for 30 seconds after successfully completing the learn procedure.

Wipe down the environment surrounding the ckp sensor before removing its bolt and sensor. Reposition the ckp sensor in its original place then install the ckp sensor bolt using a torque of 25 n.m (18 lb ft). Finish the Starter installation after reattaching the ckp sensor electrical connector. A ckp system variation learn procedure must be completed after removing or replacing the Crankshaft Position Sensor.

To change the crankshaft position (CKP), disconnect the negative Battery Cable first. Remove the serpentine belts from the Crankshaft Pulley, and then make use of a 28mm socket in removal of the crankshaft Harmonic Balancer retaining bolt. Use the balancer remover (J38197) and remove the crankshaft Harmonic Balancer. Next, pull off the Crankshaft Position Sensor shield without using pry bar, pull the sensor electrical connector, and remove the sensor from the block face. To install, mount the Crankshaft Position Sensor onto the face of the engine block and tighten the bolts to 20-40 n.m (14-28 lb ft). Return the Crankshaft Position Sensor shield to its place and reattach the electrical connector. Mount the balancer onto the crankshaft, apply thread sealer (GM-1052080) or equivalent on crankshaft balancer bolt threads, and tighten to 150n.m +76 degrees (110 lb ft +76 degrees). Lastly, install the serpentine accessory Drive Belt and reconnect the negative Battery Cable.

To replace the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor, remove first the Starter and also disconnect the ckp sensor's electrical connector. Clean the area of the ckp sensor to avoid the debris from entering the engine, then take all the precautions to remove the bolthead of ckp sensor and remove ckp sensor. For installation, relocates the ckp sensor in place and install the ckp sensor bolt again make it tight with its torque as 25n. M (18 lb ft). Reconnect the electrical connector for ckp sensor and replace the Starter back. Finally, do the ckp system variation learn procedure.

A vehicle technician should disconnect the negative Battery Cable before vehicle lifter and start sensor replacement. Start by removing the Starter while you disconnect the electrical connector for the ckp sensor. First clean the area surrounding the ckp sensor to keep dirt from entering the engine before using a tool to remove its retaining fastener and extract the sensor from its location. When installing the ckp sensor return it to its original position then use the retaining fastener to secure it by applying 25 n.m of torque (18 lb ft). At this stage, you should reconnect the ckp sensor electrical connector while reinstalling the Starter, lower the vehicle and complete the reconnection of the negative Battery Cable. Terminal the ckp system variation learn process.

Start the Crankshaft Position Sensor service through two steps: first link the scan tool and engage the parking brake then block the drive wheels and close the hood. Select park (A/T) or neutral (M/T) then let the engine idle before coolant temperature reaches 65°c (150°F). All accessories need to be turned off while the brakes must stay engaged. Check dtc p1336 crankshaft position (CKP) system variation not learned following unsuccessful execution of the ckp system variation learn procedure. Through the scan tool you can activate the crankshaft position system variation learn procedure before slowing the engine to 4,000 rpm then immediately release the throttle as the speed drops. Finish the learn procedure by turning off the ignition after 15 seconds of successful completion.

You need to run the crankshaft position (CKP) system variation learn procedure after removing or changing the sensor. Start the replacement process by disconnecting the battery negative terminal while lifting the vehicle. Before installing the Starter disconnect the ckp sensor electrical connector. Empty the area surrounding the ckp sensor of debris before removing its retaining bolt to extract the sensor. Put the ckp sensor into position and fix it with the retaining fastener while ensuring the bolt reaches 25 n.m of torque (18 lb ft). Follow installation by reconnecting the ckp sensor electrical connector then reinstalling the Starter before lowering the vehicle and connecting the negative Battery Cable. The ckp system variation learn process should be completed as the final step.

To replace crankshaft position (CKP) sensor, make sure that ignition key is off or lock and all electrical loads are off; tool may contact live terminals, therefore always disconnect the negative Battery Cable throughout the tools to prevent injuries and damages. Start with lifting the vehicle and removing the Starter. Unplug the ckp sensor electrical connector and clean the surrounding of the sensor so that debris does not enter into the engine. Remove ckp sensor retaining fastener and then the ckp sensor it self. To install the ckp sensor put it in place, fastened with the retaining fastener, and tighten to 25 n.m (18 lb ft). As for the ckp sensor, you must reestablish the electrical connector to it, reinstall the Starter, lower the vehicle, and reattach the negative Battery Cable. Lastly, do the ckp system variation learn procedure.

To replace the Crankshaft Position (CKP) Sensor, one should raise and support the vehicle first. Remove the CKP sensor electrical connector, the fuel line bracket, and bolt. Apply penetrating oil on the CKP sensor and let it soak before you remove the sensor. Unscrew the CKP sensor bolt, wiggle the sensor in forward and backward direction, remove it. Check the wear of the CKP sensor. normal wear should be seen on the wear strips whereas, the sensing element should not show no wear. If there is severe or abnormal wear on the sensing element change the sensor. If re-using the old sensor, inspect both O-rings and replace if needed then lubricate the O-rings with clean engine oil. The CKP sensor should seat all the way against the crankshaft reluctor ring, with the upper flange not seating against the engine block. Set the CKP sensor to detach, at that point clearing the hole at the bolt before reinstalling the CKP sensor bolt with adhesive for the threads (use GM P/N U.S. 12345493, GM P/N Canada 10953488, or same if reusing the old sensor). Tighten the bolt to 12 N.m (106 lb in), reattach the CKP sensor with the electric connector, reinstall the fuel line bracket and bolt, lower the vehicle, and perform CKP system variance learn subroutine.

Place the new crankshaft position sensor and secure it with the crankshaft position sensor bolt, tightening it to 10 N.m (89 lb in).

Disconnect the wiring harness connector from the CKP sensor pigtail and detach the pigtail from the retainer.

Start the vehicle, apply the service brake pedal firmly, and ensure the transaxle is in Park.

Install the CKP sensor shield and connect the CKP sensor electrical connector.

Disconnect the CKP sensor electrical connector and remove the CKP sensor retaining bolt.

Allow the coolant temperature to reach at least 70°C (158°F), then turn off the ignition.

Disconnect the negative battery cable.

Reconnect the CKP sensor electrical connector, reinstall the starter, lower the vehicle, and reconnect the negative battery cable.

Replace the CKP sensor O-ring with a new one, lubricate it with clean engine oil, and install the CKP sensor, ensuring the mounting surface is clean and free of burrs.

Disconnect the CKP sensor electrical connector and remove the CKP sensor retaining bolt.

Remove the CKP sensor retaining bolt and then the CKP sensor itself.

Remove the starter.

Lubricate the CKP sensor O-ring with clean engine oil.

Reconnect the CKP sensor electrical connector.

Lubricate the O-ring seal with clean engine oil.

Remove the starter and disconnect the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor electrical connector.

Reconnect the CKP sensor electrical connector.

Remove the CKP sensor retaining fastener and then take out the CKP sensor.

Place the CKP sensor back in position and secure it with the retaining fastener, tightening it to 25 N.m (18 lb ft).

Raise the vehicle and remove the starter.

Address the relevant DTCs or idle the engine until the coolant temperature is adequate.

Do not reuse the original O-ring seal; instead, install a new O-ring seal lubricated with clean engine oil.

Perform the CKP System Variation Learn Procedure.

Perform the CKP system variation learn procedure.

Remove the CKP sensor retaining fastener and then the CKP sensor itself.

Reconnect the engine wiring harness electrical connector to the CKP sensor and reinstall the starter.

Reinstall the engine shield and secure it with the engine shield bolts, tightening them to 20 N.m (15 lb ft).

Reconnect the CKP sensor electrical connector, reinstall the starter, lower the vehicle, and reconnect the negative battery cable.

Remove the engine shield bolts and then the engine shield.

Raise the vehicle and remove the starter.
