Chevrolet Oil Pan Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Ensure Proper Installation of the Oil Pan on Chevrolet Colorado?
A: To replace the Oil Pan you first need to remove the oil level indicator and tube and the engine protection shield. Drain the engine oil and then remove parts to acquire the clearance for the Oil Pan. For rwd, take off the power steering gear. For the 4wd, the first thing you should be doing is taking out the front propeller shaft, then the differential carrier assembly bushing to frame bolts, and pull towards down while securing the pinion yoke in not to rotate. At this point, pull out the service, plug out the nut attaching the fuel hose/pipe bracket to the transmission and the four lower bolts of the transmission securing them to the Oil Pan. For 4wd also unbolt the power steering gear mounting bolts and pull the power steering gear down for access. Now we can disconnect the engine wiring harness retainers from the Oil Pan, thereafter remove the Oil Pan bolts. Install two bolts in the tapped holes at the rear of the Oil Pan as jack screws, and screw them in evenly to release the Oil Pan from the engine block, and remove the Oil Pan and two bolts from the jack screw holes. Check and clean the sealing surface of the engine block. While mating the Oil Pan, spread a 5.5mm (0.22 in) narrow sealer at the marked and 3mm (0.12 in) spread at the mark while making sure that the sealer does not run on the oil pump pipe and screen assembly. Position the Oil Pan to the engine block so the rear Oil Pan surface is level to the rear block surface. In case transmission is removed, use a straight edge for a requirement of alignment; if installed, make sure the Oil Pan is completely rearward from the transmission mounting surface. Mount the Oil Pan bolts, fitting its side bolts to 25 n.m. (18 lb ft), and its end bolts to 10 n.m (89 lb in). Attach the engine wiring harness retainers to the Oil Pan and for 4wd mount the power steering gear on top of the frame assembly to tighten mounting bolts. Installs the four lower transmission mounting bolts with tightening 50n.m (37 lb ft) and later tightening the nuts connecting the fuel hose/pipe bracket to the transmission 20 n.m (15 lb ft). Mount the service slot plug and relevant parts: for rwd, install the power steering gear; for rwd, install the power steering gear; for 4 wd, position the differential carrier assembly to the frame, install bush to the frame bolt, 152 n.m(112 lb ft), install front propeller shaft. Lastly, after checking that the engine spacer will have no problem fitting into the spare cylinder, install the engine protection shield, the oil level indicator and tube, and fill the engine with oil.
  • Q: How to Replace an Oil Pan for Off Vehicle on Chevrolet S10?
A: In order to remove the Oil Pan, one should first remove the Oil Pan Drain Plug and drain the engine oil into an appropriate recipient. Nexal the engine oil level sensor if necessary, then you pull off the Oil Pan bolts and nuts, remove the Oil Pan, and the gasket also needs to be discarded. Clean all sealing areas on the engine and Oil Pan. The adhesive used when reinstalling should be a 5 mm (0.197-in.) wide and 25 mm (1.0-in.) long bead of adhesive gm p/n (12346141) (Canadian P/N 10953433) or equivalent to both the right and left sides of the engine front cover to the engine block junction and the crankshaft rear oil seal housing to the engine block junction at the Oil Pan sealing surfaces. Always use a new Oil Pan Gasket and install in while the gasket is still wet. The Oil Pan alignment should be flush with a maximum of 0.3mm (0.011 inch) in the front from the rear face of the engine block. Attach the Oil Pan onto the engine block, pushing the gasket into the grooves, and slide the Oil Pan back against a suitable straight edge. Install the Oil Pan bolts and nuts loosely, and then check the pan-to-transmission housing gap with a feeler gauge. When any of the three points reads more than 0.3 mm (0.011 inch), align again until it falls within specification. Tighten the Oil Pan bolts and nuts in sequence to 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs.) and measure the clearance once more to check if the alignment is right. Replace a new Oil Pan Drain Plug seal (O-ring) on the Oil Pan Drain Plug and fasten it tight to 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs.). Lastly, make sure to replace a new engine oil level sensor if required, tighten it to 13 nm (115 inch lbs.).
  • Q: How to replace the oil pan on 4WD on Chevrolet Tahoe?
A: To change the Oil Pan of the 4wd vehicles, first, jack up and support the vehicle. For 1500 series, unfasten the Oil Pan skid plate bolts and skid plate, where available. For 2500 series, loosen the two rear Oil Pan skid plate bolts and remove the 2 front bolts and the skid plate if equipped. Next you will take off the front differential carrier, unbolt and hang the steering rack downward, next you will put a suitable Oil Pan Drain Plug under the Oil Pan Drain Plug and take off the Oil Pan Drain Plug (430), so that the oil can drain out entirely. Replace the Drain Plug and tighten it to 25 nm (18 lb ft). Put the drain pan under the Oil Filter (437) and remove the Oil Filter allowing it to drain before re-installing it, and tighten to 30 nm (22 lb ft). Remove the right and left side transmission cover bolts and cover, followed by the removal of crossbar bolts/nuts and crossbar for both series. The involved work involves disjoining the engine harness electrical connector from the oil level sensor, and the a/c compressor bracket bolts; which are to be undone before you undo the Oil Pan bolts and the Oil Pan itself. If you are repurposing the Oil Pan, remove the old pan gasket rivets if needed, remove the old gasket and the old rivets. For installation, apply a new Oil Pan Gasket to the Oil Pan, apply a 5 mm (0.20 in) bead of sealant, 20 mm (0.80 in) long, to the engine block on the front and rear cover gasket tabs, and then install the Oil Pan and the remain of Oil Pan bolts, tighten m6 bolts 12 nm (106 lb in) and m8 bolts 25 nm (18 lb ft). Install 2 lower trans bolts and tighten them to a torque of 50 nm (37 lb ft), then install the a/c compressor bracket bolts and tighten it to a torque of 50 nm (37 lb ft). Connect the engine harness electrical connection to the oil level sensor get the threads of the crossbar bolts clean using denatured alcohol apply thread lock, gm p/n 12345493 (Canadian P/N1053488) or the equivalent and install the crossbar with bolts/nuts and zero head torque 120nm 21lbft on 2500 series, 100nm74lbft on 1500 series. Install the left side transmission cover bolt and bolt this down to 12 nm (106 lb in), then install the right side transmission cover bolt and tighten to 12 nm (106 lb in). If using the old Oil Pan, drain the old Oil Filter and replace with new Oil Filter (437), lubricating the seal with clean engine oil and applying 30 nm (22 lb ft) torque. Finally, install and tighten the Oil Pan Drain Plug (430) to 25 nm (18 lb ft), reinstall the front differential carrier with raising the steering rack and install the bolts tightening left side up to 200 nm (148 lb ft), and the right up to 100 nm (74 lb ft). For 2500 series place the Oil Pan skid plate you have to tighten 2 rear bolts and 2 front bolts if it is available tightening it to 28 nm (21 lb ft); for 1500 series, position the skid plate and install the bolts if equipped and tighten to 28 nm (21lb ft). Drop the vehicle, put oil in the engine as new oil, start the engine to check for leaks.
